Range: South East Asia

Habitat: Heavily forested, tropical forest

Natural Diet: Rodents, small birds, and lizards

Diet at Rain Forest: Rodents

Size: 18-36" inches

Keeper Notes:   This small, arboreal snake is cryptically colored and extremely thin.  This combination of adaptations allow the animal to hunt in the trees for its favorite prey, birds.   Virtually all deciduous and tropical forests, including those in the United States, have some form of thin, extremely well camouflaged snakes that do most of their hunting in trees.  This species represents one that uses venom to help catch its prey items.

Caudal luring is also used by this species of snake to lure in unsuspecting dinner items.  The tail is usually rust or light red colored; by slowly moving the tail, the snake can trick an unsuspecting prey item into striking range.  An unsuspecting bird or small lizard may venture to close to the snake while attempting to eat the "moving worm", which is actually the snakes tail.

Status in Wild: Stable in most parts of its range
